Young Artists from Plovdiv and Timisoara together in an exhibition, part of a residency program
December 13, 202318 authors from the residency program “Connectivity 2023 Plovdiv – Timisoara” participate in a collective exhibition
“Urban Mythology” is an exhibition in which 9 young authors from Plovdiv and 9 from the Romanian city of Timisoara participate. They were selected for the residency program “Re: connect” of “Sdruzenie Izkustvo Dnes”, which has been taking place since November 2022. Last year, the Bulgarian participants visited the city of Timisoara, which this year is the European Capital of Culture. During a week, they got to know the local cultural life and built creative contact with the other artists from the project. During the past months, through online meetings, they maintained the established relationship and prepared for the exhibition. From July 24, the Romanian artists, together with the Bulgarian authors, will install their works in the building of the City Art Gallery – Plovdiv, 15 “Knyaz Alexnader I”” street. The visiting artists will have the opportunity to explore the Plovdiv cultural scene.
The theme of the exchange gives the authors the opportunity to contextualize their impressions of either city by creating a “visual mythology” through the methods of contemporary art. Mythology is a mediator between private and public perception of the world. It is a narrative that composes meaning and transforms intimate truths into universal principles that mirror the collective unconscious. The shared focus of the artists will create a field for a direct encounter with the mythological topos of the city, which will illustrate the connection between the two capitals of culture beyond the obvious specifics.
The opening of the “Urban Mythology” exhibition will take place on August 2, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Art Gallery at 15 “Knyaz Alexander I” Street. The exhibit will be open to visitors until the end of August, and curatorial tours will be held every weekend. Entrance is free.
The artists included in the Re:connect program are:
Ilie Duta, Dorian Bolca, Mihai Toth, Mirela Cerbu, Andrei Bucovanu, Bogdan Matei, Christian Graure Natalia Bica, Senziana Gheorghe (Romania) and Ivelina Ivanova, Tsvetelina Angelova, Tsvetomira Borisova, Osman Yuseinov, Yavor Kostadinov, Valko Chobanov, Mitch Brezunek, Harita Assumani, Aaron Roth (Bulgaria).
The project is implemented with the financial support of the National Fund “Culture” under the Program for the Development of Private Cultural Organizations and the Municipality of Plovdiv. The project is being implemented throughout 2023.
